The Importance of Working With an Engagement Photographer in Miami
Working with an engagement photographer in Miami is a fun process centered on the next step in your relationship. It allows you to enjoy your engagement without rushing into wedding planning, and it’s one of the few things you’ll be able to experience privately as a couple prior to the start of your pre-wedding events.
An engagement photoshoot is also an experience where we can get to know each other and learn how to move through posing and lighting before your wedding day. It gives me insight into how you interact as a couple and creates a level of familiarity between us, which is needed to photograph you in a way that feels genuine to your story. What I learn about you during your engagement session, as your future wedding photographer, is invaluable.
When to Schedule Your Engagement Photoshoot in South Florida
As an engagement photographer in Miami, I typically work with my couples in the months leading up to their wedding. My best recommendation is scheduling your engagement session at least 3-6 months in advance of your wedding. This timeline will help cut down on stress in the months leading up to your wedding while also giving you a fun couples activity to enjoy together.
Best Day of the Week to Schedule Your Engagement Photos in Miami
Most Miami wedding photographers, myself included, dedicate their weekends to photographing weddings. This leaves weekdays open and available for engagement photos. If you’ve selected a public location for your Miami engagement photos, scheduling your session during the week will also cut down on the amount of foot traffic we will encounter, allowing you to enjoy your time in front of the camera away from onlookers, in a relaxed environment.
Best Time of Day to Schedule Engagement Photos in Miami
The incredible aspect about scheduling engagement pictures in Miami and locations throughout South Florida is the year-round sunshine, adding the warmth of a golden glow to your photos. What can be tricky about working to capture that light is the time of day it’s available versus the current season we are in. Below is a quick outline of the best time of day to schedule your engagement photos in Miami for each season.
Winter
From December through mid-March, 3 pm to 5 pm is the best window of time to schedule your engagement photoshoot in Miami. Keep in mind that Daylight Saving Time occurs on the second Sunday of March, which will push the time of your session up by one hour.
Spring
During Spring (April & May), the sunset changes drastically. This affects the availability of when to schedule your session at photography locations throughout Miami. Usually, in April, the best time of day is 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Throughout May, those hours change slightly to 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
Summer
The summer sunset (June through August) in South Florida brings about slightly cooler temperatures from the midday heat, along with a kaleidoscope of colored light to fill the backdrop of your engagement photos. Summer engagement sessions are best planned for the hours of 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm.
Fall
Much like spring, the fall (September through November) sunset in South Florida also experiences a radical change from its shoulder season. For couples selecting an early September photoshoot, the recommended time is 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. From late September to mid-October, the best light appears from 5 pm to 7 pm, and when November arrives, 3 pm to 5 pm offers gold-washed hues.
What to Wear to Your Engagement Photos in South Florida & Miami
The couples I photograph are given stylistic control over how their engagement photos look and feel. My belief as a Miami engagement photographer is that what you wear to your session should be a fun process to navigate while allowing you to envision the desired outcome of your pictures. Here are a few quick and easy pointers when it comes to selecting attire for your engagement pictures in Miami.
- Neutrals – Contrary to popular belief, attire in neutral tones will not wash you out. Of course, there is an exception for everything, but neutral tones and earthy hues look amazing in engagement photos.
- Black Clothing – Yes, black can sometimes be slimming, but don’t select black attire for that reason alone. Depending on the location of your engagement photoshoot, black can also appear out of place or make an organic setting appear ‘heavy’.
- Matching – The goal should be to focus on outfit choices that are complementary or coordinated, without being matchy. Choose colors that will work together to create visual appeal in your selected atmosphere.
- Purchasing New Clothing – Do you have something in your closet that you absolutely love and feel amazing in? Then I would love for you to wear it to your engagement session. You do not have to buy anything new for the purposes of your Miami engagement pictures, unless of course you want to.
- What to Avoid – Neons, clothing with small repeating patterns, tennis shoes, graphic tees, logos, sunglasses, and baseball caps. The final thing to avoid is a mismatch in degree of style. If one of you is wearing jeans and the other a gown, then your photos will not appear balanced; try to keep your overall style coordinated.
When couples book an engagement session with me, I send them an in-depth guide on selecting attire. The guide touches on color theory and working within your preferred style. These details will help you choose what to wear in a way that suits your vision while removing overwhelm.

Preparing for Your Miami Engagement Pictures in the Days Leading up to Your Session
It can sometimes feel intimidating to prepare for your engagement session, especially if this is your first time in front of the camera together. Through a guided process, I work with my couples from the time of inquiry to the days leading up to their session to help them feel prepared and comfortable in front of the camera. Here are a few of the tips I often provide.
- Ring Cleaning – Have your engagement ring cleaned ahead of your session for those close-up shots. Impurities can easily appear on the camera and make your ring look ‘cloudy’. The best sparkle comes from a quick pre-clean, whether done at home or through your jeweler.
- Makeup Trial – If you’ve already selected the hair and makeup artist for your wedding, I strongly recommend having your trial on the day of your engagement photos. Professional hair and makeup stands up to the South Florida heat and humidity while photographing beautifully.
- Change of Clothes – I allow my couples a choice of two locations and an attire change for their session. However, this can cut down on the amount of time spent in front of the camera. Also keep in mind, not all locations provide privacy or a restroom, which may lead to a quick change in your car.
- Comfy Shoes – If your chosen shoes for your engagement photos are not the most comfortable selection and we will be encountering sand, cobblestone, or other elements, bring along a pair of flip-flops for the in-between moments, including the change in location, which can help you navigate the session more easily.
- Pockets – Once you’ve arrived at your engagement session, your pockets should be empty. Items left in pockets can appear bulky in photos, detracting the eye from the beauty of yoru images.
- Timing – If we are photographing at an outdoor location, timing is everything for chasing the light. Arriving early or on time will give you the most out of your session. Late arrivals result in a reduction of time and loss of light.
- Cocktails Allowed – Champagne, beer, wine, or anything you love to enjoy together is welcome to come along with you to the session, when enjoyed responsibly. Popping a cork on the beach adds a level of fun to your session and creates incredible images of you toasting one another.
6 Best Locations for Engagement Photos in Miami & South Florida
As a Miami engagement photographer who also works with couples in Palm Beach and Naples, FL, I understand that many of the couples I work with live in New York or have strong family ties to NY. Which is why I offer the flexibility of choosing a setting in Miami, Naples, Palm Beach, Brooklyn, or NYC for engagement photos. Through the details listed below, I’ve included 6 of my favorite locations to capture engagement photos in Miami, as well as my top pick in Palm Beach and Naples.

1. Miami Beach
With white sandy shores and pristine views of turquoise waters, the shores of Miami Beach are tranquil, while the city is diverse and vibrant. For engagement photos in Miami in a relaxed setting, with an atmospheric backdrop of the city, Miami Beach offers a private experience where you can stroll the promenade past the towering palm trees or walk along the shoreline.
Parking
There are a few city-run parking garages in the area where you can park that will provide easy access to Miami Beach. The daily rate is typically $20, or you can choose to pay hourly. I will advise you on the best location to park based on where we will be meeting for your session.
Entrance Fee
There is no fee associated with accessing Miami Beach or the promenade.

2. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden
Located just off Old Cutler Rd in Miami, lies Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, 83-acres of lush tropical scenery and waterfalls in a secluded setting. The garden is dramatic and picturesque, and features a conservatory, bamboo groves, sunken gardens, and stone-lined walkways. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is open to the public for general admission, but there are several private and semi-private locations throughout where your Miami engagement pictures can be captured, evoking the charm and pastoral landscape of idyllic South Florida.
Parking
Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden offers parking free of charge at their Main Visitor Entrance.
Entry & Additional Details
Engagement photoshoots at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden may only take place from the hours of 10 am to 3pm. In lieu of standard admission tickets, it is required that we apply for a photograph permit on the day of your photoshoot, which will give us two hours of access to the garden. The permit will be filed by me, on your behalf, prior to your arrival.

3. Vizcaya Museum & Gardens
A historical Miami engagement photo location, Vizcaya Museum & Gardens dates back to 1912. The former villa home of James Deering, the estate is perhaps best known for its setting depicting gardens, stone statues, and an antique barge in the waters beyond the open-air pavilion. Ornate architecture and Italian-style gardens at Vizcaya work to create engagement photos embodying European elegance, with a romantic editorial feeling.
Parking
Parking at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is available on site but can be limited. Located within one mile of South Beach and 10 miles of Miami Beach, Vizcaya can easily be reached by ride-share or the public monorail should parking be at capacity upon your arrival.
Entry & Additional Details
Entry to Vizcaya Museum and Gardens as part of your engagement photography experience will be included through a photography permit, which I will file on your behalf. Photography permits are available on a first-come, first-served basis and in limited quantities through a reservation system, making it essential to plan in advance.

4. Matheson Hammock Park
A landscape of contrasts, Matheson Hammock Park features several settings for engagement photos that embody the enchanting landscape of Miami. A portion of the park stretches along the marina, with direct views of the bay and a walkway that extends out in the water. Further inland at the park, you’ll find shaded oak trees and Spanish moss, shaping the atmosphere of engagement photos with streams of golden light and playful shadows.
Parking
Paid parking is available at several locations throughout the park, with payment made through PayByPhone or ParkMobile. The weekday fee for parking at Matheson Hammock Park is $7. I will advise on which parking lot to meet in once we’ve scheduled your session.
Entry Fee
Aside from your parking fee, there is no additional charge for entering Matheson Hammock Park for your engagement photos.

5. Worth Avenue in Palm Beach
The emblematic Worth Avenue in Palm Beach is often referred to as the ‘Rodeo Drive’ of the east. Home to high-end luxury retailers, iconic Worth Avenue is equally known for its Mediterranean-style architecture, including courtyards draped in bougainvillea, hidden pathways, and stone arches. By far, the biggest monument at Worth Ave is the 25’ beachside clock tower designed in Mediterranean Revival and Moorish-style architecture. Worth Avenue engagement photos are elegant and refined, depicting backdrops of sculpted topiaries and stone fountains.
Parking
There are several options for parking at Worth Avenue, including street parking managed through the ParkMobile App, valet parking garages, and self-parking garages. Where we begin your session will determine the best place to park, which will be discussed throughout the planning process.
Additional Details
Worth Avenue in Palm Beach tends to become a magnet for tourists from the months of November through April. Lower traffic levels tend to occur from May through October, which would allow for a more relaxed photography experience.

6. Naples Beach
Idyllic and serene, Naples Beach features soft sandy shores and the lull of salt water lapping over the beach. The architecture lining the way to the beach is vibrant and energetic, personifying South Florida’s charm. Stepping onto the beach is an experience met with local vegetation, including saw palmetto, sea oats, and lush, colorful railroad vines. Naples Beach is ideal for couples who desire a variety of engagement photos with different backdrops in a location that is easily accessible.
Parking
Parking at Naples Beach is managed by City of Naples pay stations and charged at a $5 per hour rate. All major credit cards are accepted, as well as quarters or pay-by-phone options.
Additional Details
Engagement photography sessions planned at Naples Beach from the months of May through October will need to be mindful of turtle nesting season.
